Scenes from the domestic life of a middle-class Portuguese family, alternating with newsreel footage of the rise, glory, and fall of Salazarism, constructing a parallel between the traditional head of the family and the dictator.
The conflicts and frustrations of the daughters, representing two different generations, are presented didactically through their relationships with their parents, grandmother, and the maid. All of this is articulated with musical interludes where, ultimately, the history of a family and the History of a country confront, complement, and blur into each other.
