In 1999, Portugal celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974, which ended 48 years of dictatorship and fascism. On April 24, the Portuguese theater company O Bando staged Madrugada, a memory-performance of those 48 years of darkness and the 25 that followed. Rui Simões, using footage from that show along with other material he collected, directed the documentary Dawns.
