Between 1961 and 1974, 100,000 young Portuguese men left to fight in the wars of the former colonies. During the same period, another 100,000 left Portugal specifically to avoid fighting that same war. Much has been said, written, and filmed about those who went to war. Regarding the others, nothing exists; it is a kind of taboo subject in our society. What role did these men who "fled the war" play in building the country we are today? What paths did they take? In what ways did they resist?
