The "Ruas da Amargura" (Streets of Bitterness) are populated by men and women of all ages with emotional and financial needs, mental health issues, alcoholism, drug addiction, or simply people who arrived in Portugal looking for a slightly better life.
On the other side of the streets, there is a swarm of volunteers, social workers, and various technicians who build and maintain support structures—some thinking of better days, others institutionalizing the help without believing the phenomenon can be cured.
