Nuno, a nine-year-old boy, runs away from home on the night of April 24, 1974. Fed up with the arguments between his mother and stepfather, he decides to find his father—but he doesn't know where he lives. To hide from the police, he slips into a large building that is being abandoned in a hurry. Cars and people speed away; no one notices Nuno. He is left alone with a guard dog. Late into the night, Nuno and the dog fall asleep in each other's arms. They wake up the next morning to shouting coming from the street. Nuno thinks it's his mother looking for him and runs to the window to see what is happening. The street is full of people, tanks, and soldiers. It is the 25th of April Revolution. Nuno is convinced that his mother started the revolution just to find him. Only later will he learn that he had hidden inside the PIDE (secret police) headquarters that night.
